Men of League try golf and bowls, too

THE inaugural Central Coast Men of League (MOL) branch golf-bowls fund-raising promotion at Everglades Country Club on Monday was an outstanding success.

President of the local MOL branch Jim Robinson, of Woy Woy, said proceeds from the day would be split between his organisation and the Donnica Clarke Foundation which helps young sportspeople in pursuit of their aims.

Donnica Clarke was a leading surf lifesaving competitor and athlete and her life was tragically cut short when she was only 16.

The foundation honours her love for sport and to help other young sports people.

"Both Donnica's parents Tony and Kerrie Clarke attended the function and were pleased with the way it went," Mr Robinson said.

He said the auction conducted by former Queensland State of Origin player Jamie Goddard was most successful and former Parramatta star John Peard kept everyone amused with his wit as MC.

"We had 62 sponsors and all of them indicated they wanted to be associated with a similar golf-bowls fund-raiser next year," he said.

The MOL branch started in March this year locally with 224 members.

It now has 480 members.

The branch helps former rugby league players who need assistance and it also acts as a networking group for followers of the code.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
